Chapter Thirteen

It was not surprising that Professor Casey's group would revel in simple pleasures—including food—after a close brush with death. All felt like living for the moment to celebrate life. They would have been less cheerful in they had known something of the passengers who were preparing to follow on the next shuttle.

The passenger manifest did not include an Ilya Simonov but it did boast a Kenneth Kneedler who would fit the same description. Also on that manifest were several construction workers?nd a group of business entrepreneurs. The businessmen all had several things in common: they were firm-muscled, cool of eye, and as careful as Simonov to try being inconspicuous. Though most were on the swarthy side with mediterranean features, they all had disarming names. Not Canelli, but Kane; not D'Amora, but Damon; not Trombino, but Thompson.

Had passenger Kneedler shared secrets with Kane, Damon, Thompson, and the others, all would have made very considerable changes in their separate plans. But these passengers were all intent on a dull, uneventful trip. The last thing any of them would have done was exchange such confidences…
